The Niña, Spanish for 'little girl', was among the trio of ships Columbus used in his 1492 Atlantic crossing. Originally named Santa Clara, she was likely named after her owner, Juan Niño. A caravel, she was Columbus' favorite, carrying 18 men under Vicente Yáñez Pinzón. Departing from Palos de la Frontera on August 3, they reached the Bahamas on October 12. After losing the Santa María, Columbus returned on the Niña in 1493. She served in the second voyage, explored Cuba, and survived a 1495 hurricane. Chartered for a Rome voyage, she was captured but escaped. In 1498, she returned to Hispaniola, and in 1501, traded at the Pearl Coast. Under Columbus' command, she logged at least 25,000 miles.
